Embracing Uncertainty: The Growth That Change Brings
Share
Let’s talk about change. It can feel uncomfortable, right? It definitely does for me!
Here's a short story about my journey-when I graduated from San Francisco State University in December 2024 with a degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Sociology. Looking back, my college experience was truly amazing. But getting there? That was a journey in itself.
I still remember the mix of excitement and nerves when I received that “Congratulations, you’re accepted…” email. I had lived with my family my whole life, so the thought of moving to a new city and living on my own was a little scary. At the same time, I was ready!! I wanted to experience independence, build my own routine, and grow in ways I never had before. And I did.
During my time at SFSU, I embraced independence by taking myself on solo dates, met new friends, gained confidence in public speaking, tried new foods, and explored everywhere I could. Living on my own and far away from home taught me so much. Everyone should experience that kind of independence at least once in their life.
But college wasn’t always smooth sailing. During my first and second years, I had to complete general education (GE) courses—classes that weren’t directly related to my major. At the time, I was studying general business, so I enrolled in Business Calculus. Math was never my strong suit, and let’s just say, solving equations was rough. I ended up not passing Calculus II, and in that moment, I felt discouraged and wondered if I’d even graduate on time.
Thankfully, my advisor was incredibly supportive and encouraged me to switch to Statistics instead. It wasn’t easy either, but it was more manageable. Determined to pass, I attended my professor’s office hours every week—and finally passed with a B (which, trust me, felt like an A+ after that struggle😆).
By my second year, I switched my major to Communication Studies. I had always been interested in it and wanted to improve my public speaking and non-verbal skills. The classes were so fun and engaging!! Then my advisor encouraged me to take summer classes, at first, I was hesitant because of how fast pace they were🥲 but despite the challenge, I pushed through and made it! Looking back, I can confidently say I grew so much in every COMM and SOC classes I took, and I’m so grateful for my professors and classmates who supported me along the way.
Fast forward to my third year, and an unexpected opportunity came my way. My advisor told me I could graduate early. EARLY?! That was rare to hear. At first, I hesitated. Was I ready? What would this mean for my future? Fear started to creep in. But after praying on it and asking for strength, wisdom, and guidance (and, of course, hoping for that 4.0 GPA), I decided to go for it. I trusted God along the way.
It wasn’t always easy—I faced challenges, moments of doubt, and plenty of trials. But through it all, I was uplifted by my family, friends, and church community. They reminded me that I was walking in my purpose, even when I couldn’t see the full picture.
Through my semesters, I worked hard to maintain a 3.60–4.0 GPA and was honored to make the Dean’s List eight times. My dedication, late-night study sessions, and commitment to growth paid off. Graduating college was bittersweet, and I’ll always cherish the memories of my undergrad years! 🥹
Now, I’m back home in Southern California, learning to embrace yet another change. I have big dreams, and sometimes, I can only see what’s right in front of me. But deep down, I know there’s something greater ahead.
That’s the thing about change—it stretches you, challenges you, and helps you grow in ways you never expected. Even when you don’t see immediate results, trust that they’re coming. Growth happens in the process. So if an opportunity presents itself, take it. Even if it feels uncertain, lean into it. You never know what’s on the other side of that leap of faith.
I hope my story encourages you in some way. Here’s to stepping out of your comfort zone and into something amazing!🌟
Keep shining. Keep thriving,
Nyla S.
